This painting is mainly inspired by its title. There is something quite magical about butterflies congregating on an animal, be it to take minerals from their tears or to take a short break from fluttering around. I chose to paint a giraffe because I saw them for the first time in my life, and it was an unbelievable sight! They mainly feed on acacia trees, and they are considered a vulnerable species because of habitat destruction, either for firewood or cattle grazing. Although they are being re-introduced to several national parks, it’s still important to preserve their habitats, because these gentle patched giants are a keystone species for the places they inhabit.
